$1,400.00

Remojadas

Veracruz, Mexico

600 to 900 AD

Ceramic

Height 6 1/2 inches

Provenance: Private Collection, Honolulu, Hawaii; Artemis Gallery, Erie, Colorado, October 11, 2013; Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, prior to 1970

The head is modeled with a wide eyed expression, showing large round eyes with dark pupils set beneath a plain, unpainted brow. The mouth is open, revealing the upper teeth, and a horizontal bar shaped ornament crosses the septum of the nose. Spiral shaped ear ornaments in the natural clay color project from either side of the face.

The face is coated in a glossy black bitumen paint, which may represent a depiction of face paint applied to the figure, contrasting with the plain tan clay visible at the cap, nose ornament, and ears. The cap or headdress covering the crown of the head is left in its natural, unpainted state. The piece is currently mounted on a metal stand for display.
