The warrant is issued by the Treasurer of the Republic of Texas in the amount of $61.32, dated at Houston, November 13, 1837, and drawn for the payment of the military. It is signed by Elisha M. Pease as comptroller and by John Wyatt Moody as first auditor of the Republic, with an engraved border across the head of the sheet and the sum entered in manuscript at the right. The verso carries the payee's endorsement together with a second endorsement passing the warrant to the sheriff of Robertson County for tax, and the paper shows toning, handling creases, and light edge wear.
Elisha M. Pease served as comptroller of the Republic of Texas and was among the authors of the Republic's 1836 constitution, later serving as Governor of Texas from 1853 to 1857 and again in 1867. John Wyatt Moody served as the Republic's first auditor and had been a member of the 1836 convention at Washington on the Brazos. Warrants of this kind were issued for military service and circulated as currency in the Republic's early years.
