A watercolor by the Diné painter Robert Chee (1937–1971), worked in the traditional flat style of Southwest easel painting. The scene depicts a figure in a white hat tending a small fire beneath a stylized branching tree, set against pale mesa country, the forms drawn in clean dark outlines and filled with soft, muted color. Signed lower right.
Chee studied under the Apache artist Allan Houser at the Intermountain Indian School in Brigham City, Utah, continuing the decorative tradition shaped by earlier Diné painters such as Harrison Begay and Quincy Tahoma. His career was brief, ending with his death at age 34, and his paintings are held in collections including the Minneapolis Institute of Art and the National Museum of the American Indian.
