Watercolor
20 1/2 x 26 1/2 inches including frame
Provenance: Private collection, Flagstaff, Arizona
A watercolor by the Diné (Navajo) painter Robert Chee, who lived from 1937 to 1971 and worked in the traditional flat style of Southwest easel painting. The scene shows a figure in a white hat tending a small fire beneath a stylized branching tree, set against pale mesa country, the forms drawn in clean dark outlines and filled with soft, muted color.
Chee studied under the Apache artist Allan Houser at the Intermountain Indian School in Brigham City, Utah, and his work continues the decorative tradition shaped by earlier Diné painters such as Harrison Begay and Quincy Tahoma. His career was brief, closing with his death at the age of 34, and his paintings are held today in collections including the Minneapolis Institute of Art and the National Museum of the American Indian.
