This large-format gelatin silver print by Walter J. Lubkin documents Roosevelt, Arizona, the supply and administrative hub for the construction of Roosevelt Dam, completed in 1911 as the first major dam built by the U.S. Reclamation Service and at the time the largest masonry dam in the world. Lubkin documented the town, surrounding farms and ranches, and the daily lives of workers and communities that grew up around the project. The photograph provides an invaluable visual record of the Salt River Valley before the dam's completion fundamentally altered the landscape.
Lubkin worked as staff photographer for the United States Reclamation Service and produced thousands of images documenting the transformation of the American West through irrigation and dam construction. This view of Roosevelt, Arizona situates the town within its dramatic mountain setting, recording a community at the center of one of the most consequential engineering projects of the early twentieth century. The print is in collector condition with private Utah provenance.
