Russian silver coins with silver links and engraved plaque

Fourteen Russian imperial silver coins, each struck with the crowned double headed eagle of the Romanov arms, are linked in two staggered rows by handmade silver wire loops and closed with a spring ring clasp. At the front hangs a pointed oval plaque engraved KRIEGS ANDENKEN above and 1914 to 1915 below, its center set with a further coin pierced so that the eagle stands free in openwork against the ground. Kriegs Andenken, war memento, is the German phrase soldiers used for objects made at the front from the material to hand, and bracelets assembled from captured or circulating Russian coinage were among the most common forms produced on the Eastern Front in the first years of the war, made as gifts to send home.
