$1,200.00

Russian
19th century

Oil on wood panel

9" (22.9 cm) x 10 1/2" (26.7 cm) including frame; icon image 5 1/4" x 7"

Provenance: Christian Rub, Santa Barbara, CA; Martha Pillard, Honolulu, HI, Docent of the Honolulu Academy of Arts, acquired from Rub collection in 1999; Joseph Henry Sharp, Taos artist and friend of Martha Pillard's father

This Russian icon presents four individual Madonna images arranged in a single panel, a format known as a four-part or multi-image icon that was common in Russian Orthodox practice from the 16th century onward, allowing several devotional subjects to be venerated together in a domestic or travel context. Each of the four panels depicts a Madonna type characteristic of Russian Orthodox iconography, with the figures painted in the warm, jewel-toned palette typical of 19th-century Russian icon production and framed within the elaborately carved and gilded outer border. The format and scale suggest use as a personal or family travel icon rather than a church commission.

The painting is executed in oil on wood panel, a medium that became increasingly common in Russian icon production during the 18th and 19th centuries alongside the older egg tempera tradition. The carved frame with its gilded and inlaid border is integral to the object and in good condition. The provenance connects the work to Christian Rub of Santa Barbara, whose collection was acquired in part by Martha Pillard of Honolulu, Docent of the Honolulu Academy of Arts, and whose father was a friend of Taos artist Joseph Henry Sharp.
