Large Russian Icon, Saint George and the Dragon
Russian
19th century
Tempera and gold on wood panel
Height 35" (88.9 cm) x Width 27 1/2" (69.9 cm)
Provenance: Private collection, Edinburgh, Scotland; old exhibition labels on reverse
The icon depicts Saint George mounted on a white horse in the act of spearing the dragon, a subject central to Russian Orthodox iconographic tradition and one of the most widely produced icon types from the medieval period through the 19th century. The composition follows the established conventions of the subject, with the saint in red and gold armor, the dragon prostrate beneath the horse's hooves, and a small figure of the rescued princess visible in the upper right. The palette is characteristic of 19th-century Russian icon painting, with the red and gold of the saint's armor set against a warm brown ground and architectural elements suggesting a walled city in the background.
At 35" in height this is a large-format devotional icon, scale consistent with use in a church iconostasis or a substantial domestic chapel setting rather than personal private devotion. The panel retains old exhibition labels on the reverse, indicating a prior public or institutional history. The work comes from a private collection in Edinburgh, Scotland.
