This Russian Orthodox crucifix is cast in bronze with enamel decoration, combining the corpus of Christ with the characteristic multi-bar cross form of the Eastern Orthodox tradition, including the suppedaneum footrest and the slanted lower bar associated with Russian and Serbian Orthodox iconography. The enamel decoration in deep blue is applied to the cross arms and borders, a technique associated with quality Russian devotional metalwork production throughout the nineteenth century. The piece retains strong casting detail across the corpus and the surrounding figural and symbolic elements.
Russian Orthodox bronze crucifixes of this type were produced in significant numbers for both church and domestic use, ranging from modest cast pieces to elaborately enameled works of considerable refinement. This example falls in the upper range of nineteenth century Russian devotional bronze production, with the quality of enamel work and the scale indicating an object made for serious devotional use.
