Spears from San Cristobal, now known as Makira, were principal weapons in the southeastern Solomon Islands. Their length and balance made them suitable for both throwing and close combat, while the use of dense hardwood gave the shaft durability and weight. This example, with provenance through Massachusetts and Amsterdam collections, reflects the circulation of Solomon Islands weapons through both American and European collecting contexts.
The spear terminates in a carved and bound tip, with incised decoration on the upper shaft consistent with San Cristobal weapon traditions. The hardwood has darkened to a deep tone, with a surface patina consistent with age, handling, and long preservation. At 64 inches, the full length remains intact, preserving the clean taper and overall form of the weapon.
