$1,800.00

Nendo or eastern Reef Islands, Santa Cruz Islands, Solomon Islands

19th century

Woven banana tree bark fiber, pandanus leaf

Length 113 in (287 cm); width 9¼ in (23.5 cm)

Provenance: Sacred Heart Mission, SVD Hiltrup, Germany

Ceremonial sashes of this type were worn in the Santa Cruz Islands during significant ritual occasions, including the napa dance and the nelanga nelo, or dance of the nose ornament. The sash was folded and draped as part of ceremonial dress, with the end hanging down in front during performance. Textile traditions from Santa Cruz and nearby island groups are documented in G. Koch’s Materielle Kultur der Santa Cruz-Inseln, which provides an important scholarly framework for this category of object.

The sash is woven from banana tree bark fiber with pandanus leaf, extending to more than nine feet in length. The weave is controlled and even across the full surface, with original fringing retained at both ends and contrasting geometric banding at the terminals. Its provenance through the Sacred Heart Mission, SVD Hiltrup, Germany, places it within a missionary collecting network active in the Solomons from the late nineteenth century onward.
