Santa Cruz Islands, Temotu Province, Solomon Islands
19th century
Wood
Length 26¼ in (66.7 cm)
Provenance: English trade
Dishes from the Santa Cruz Islands were functional objects shaped with a clear sense of proportion and restraint. The elongated lenticular outline is characteristic of the region, with the carved rim rising cleanly from the bowl surface without added ornament. Objects acquired through English trade in the nineteenth century entered collections during an active period of Pacific contact and exchange.
The wood has darkened and smoothed through age, handling, and sustained use, giving the surface a consistent tone across the full length of the dish. The absence of decorative elaboration gives the form a direct, considered character rather than a plain or unfinished appearance. At this scale, the proportions hold well between the depth of the bowl and the carved rim tabs projecting at each end.
