This Santo Domingo necklace is a Depression era piece strung with white shell heishi and hung with round mosaic discs down both sides, leading to a central thunderbird pendant. Each disc is inlaid with turquoise chip over a red backing, and the thunderbird carries turquoise chip wings with a red and white checkered edge and a striped tail. During the 1930s, Santo Domingo artists worked such mosaic from trade and salvaged materials, continuing Pueblo inlay through a period of economic hardship.
The mosaic is laid flush from small pieces of turquoise and shell set into a dark and red ground, giving the discs and thunderbird their blocked color. Ten round discs step down in size from the back toward the front, framing the bird at the center. At 26 inches with a 2 1/2 inch pendant, it carries the recognizable Depression era Kewa character across the full strand.
