This Santo Domingo necklace is strung with graduated red spiny oyster shell discs and centers on a large carved shell pendant. The pendant is a rounded spiny oyster shell with a channel inlaid band of turquoise across the top, bordered by a checkerboard row of jet and mother of pearl, set in a silver bezel. Two teardrop side pendants repeat the same inlay, each a shell ground topped with the turquoise and checkerboard band.
The mosaic bands are fitted flush in the Kewa channel inlay manner, each piece of stone and shell cut to shape and set without gaps. The deep red of the spiny oyster carries across the beads and the shell grounds, set against the turquoise and black and white inlay. At 30 inches and just over 360 grams, this is a heavy, substantial necklace built around the three inlaid shell pendants.
