Image: 28 × 20 in. (71.1 × 50.8 cm); framed: 39½ × 31 in. (100.3 × 78.7 cm)
Provenance: Galerie Winkler, Papeete, Tahiti
Jean-Louis Saquet (1947–2021) was a French-born artist who settled in Tahiti after first arriving in the Marquesas Islands in 1970, and who spent the remainder of his career documenting Polynesian life through pastel, gouache, and watercolor. This seated figure study depicts a Tahitian woman rendered in Saquet's characteristic style, combining realism with a softened, stylized composition and a warm chromatic range of ochres, reds, and blues. The work is signed and dated 1992 and comes directly from Galerie Winkler, the principal commercial gallery in Papeete.
The figure is posed cross-legged against a vivid red and blue ground, her gaze directed toward the viewer with a composed, unhurried quality. Saquet's pastel technique achieves smooth tonal transitions across the figure while the background retains a looser, more gestural handling. The combination of koa framing and archival presentation reflects the care taken in preserving this work from its Tahitian gallery origin.
