Iran, Eranshahr
200–300 AD
Silver
Each: Height 2⅝ in (6.7 cm), Width 1⅝ in (4.1 cm)
Provenance: Martha Pillard, Honolulu, Hawaii; Christian Rub, Santa Barbara, California, prior to 1940
The Sasanian Empire, known in its own sources as Eranshahr, produced a distinguished tradition of worked silver objects used in courtly dress and ceremony. Belt fittings and personal ornaments in silver were markers of rank and identity across the Iranian world during the early centuries AD. This pair most likely functioned as belt components, a category of Sasanian metalwork documented in both archaeological and iconographic sources.
Each plaque is circular with a raised relief figure of an animal within a beaded border, consistent with Sasanian decorative conventions applied across seals, vessels, and personal adornment. The modeling is compact and assured, with the figures occupying the field with the economy of form characteristic of Iranian workshop production of this period. The pre-1940 provenance through two distinguished American collections gives this pair a well-documented ownership history of considerable depth.
