Senufo — Côte d'Ivoire
Early 20th century
Wood, fiber
Height: 7½ in (19.1 cm)
Provenance: Vincent Price, Los Angeles, CA
This heddle pulley is carved with a bird-form head rising above a rectangular frame incised with geometric decoration, with the lower supports retaining the rod and fiber spool used in weaving. The head is pierced for suspension, and the dark patina across the surface is consistent with extended functional use on a loom. Heddle pulleys of this type were made to serve as working tools while reflecting the Senufo tradition of investing everyday objects with sculptural care.
The piece was formerly in the collection of Vincent Price, Los Angeles, whose holdings of African and pre-Columbian art were among the most significant assembled by an American collector during the mid-twentieth century.
