Senufo — Burkina Faso
18th century
Bronze
Height: 2¾ in (7 cm)
Provenance: J.P. Chazal, Paris
This small cast bronze depicts a seated female figure with arms raised and hands held at the chest, an elongated neck with collar rings, and prominent facial features with large eyes. The figure is supported at the base by a crouching secondary form — animal or human — a compositional arrangement that adds vertical complexity to an already unusual subject within the Senufo bronze casting tradition. Small bronzes of this type from Burkina Faso are associated with divination, personal protection, and ritual use, cast through the lost-wax process in a tradition that produced figures of considerable formal invention at small scale.
The mixed green and brown patina across the surface is consistent with age and burial exposure. The piece was formerly in the collection of J.P. Chazal, Paris.
