WPA Poster Golden Gate Exposition Indian Court

$3,200.00

Louis B. Siegriest, artist

1939

Silkscreen poster, framed

Height 37 in. (94 cm), width 27 in. (68.6 cm)

Provenance: Warren Richardson Howell, San Francisco, CA

Louis B. Siegriest (1899–1989) was a California-based artist associated with the Society of Six and later employed by the Works Progress Administration Federal Art Project, through which this poster was produced. The Golden Gate International Exposition of 1939, held on Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay, featured an Indian Court exhibition presenting Native American arts and crafts to a broad public audience. WPA posters produced for the exposition are among the most graphically distinctive works of the American federal art program.

This example depicts stylized figures on horseback with animals in a flat, high-contrast design rendered in black against a vivid blue ground, reflecting the bold graphic vocabulary characteristic of WPA silkscreen production. Siegriest's composition draws on Southwest and Plains visual motifs, rendered with the economy and visual force the federal poster program demanded. The condition is reported as mint, which is uncommon for works of this age and format.

The provenance traces to Warren Richardson Howell, a prominent San Francisco rare book and print dealer with deep ties to California collecting, lending the piece a well-grounded regional history. WPA Indian Court posters appear infrequently on the market and are collected both as works of American graphic art and as documents of federal cultural policy toward Native subjects in the late 1930s. This example, framed and in mint condition, is among the more complete and presentable specimens available.
