1920s
Silver with black enamel
3 x 3 1/4 inches (7.6 x 8.3 cm)
Provenance: Private collection, Las Cruces, New Mexico
The case is rectangular with rounded corners and a hinged lid, the front worked as a grid of panels in black enamel against the polished metal, each panel pairing a small engraved vignette with a line of lettering. A circular emblem at the upper left carries the words Round The Orient over a stylized sail, and the panels around it are headed Japan, Java, Colombo, and Bombay, each showing a scene drawn in a loose cartoon line with a caption beneath. A wavy line runs through the composition as a voyage route, a border of alternating dashes frames the whole, and the reverse is plain with the enamel confined to the front.
