Sioux Beaded Hide Knife Sheath, Polychrome Zigzag

$2,800.00

Sioux, northern Plains

1880

Native hide, glass beads, sinew

Sheath length 8 1/2" (21.6 cm); knife length 10" (25.4 cm)

Provenance: Tucson trade

Beaded knife sheaths were worn at the belt as daily equipment and personal adornment across the Sioux nations, the fully beaded surface expressing the maker's skill while protecting the hide from the wear of regular use. The polychrome zigzag and chevron banding visible on this sheath represents a distinct decorative approach within Sioux beadwork, in which multiple colors are deployed in horizontal bands of shifting geometric pattern rather than the single-ground compositions more commonly associated with the tradition. Original knives retained with their sheaths are increasingly uncommon, most having been separated from their cases over the course of collection and sale.

This sheath is fully beaded in sinew-sewn construction with a dense polychrome design in white, red, blue, green, yellow, and dark tones in zigzag and banded patterns covering the full surface, with the original knife with wood handle retained. The beadwork is even and consistent throughout, the sinew-sewn construction holding the surface flat and tightly worked. Provenance traces to Tucson trade.
