Sioux, northern Plains
1880
Porcupine quillwork, red wool, hide, brass beads, tin cones
Length 17 1/4" (43.8 cm)
Provenance: Tucson, Arizona trade
Hair drops were worn suspended from the hair during ceremonies and important social occasions, among the most personal and visually striking forms of Plains personal adornment. Double-sided quillwork construction, in which the quill design is worked to read on both faces of the object, represents a technically demanding variant of the tradition requiring precise planning and execution across the full length of the piece. The combination of red wool ground, brass bead accents, and tin cone fringe at the base is consistent with Sioux personal adornment production of the 1880s.
This hair drop is worked in porcupine quillwork on both sides with a geometric design against a red wool ground, suspending multiple strands of tin cone fringe that add movement and sound when worn. The brass bead spacers and tin cone elements at the base are intact, and the piece retains its original suspension loop at the top. Provenance traces to Tucson, Arizona trade.
