Solomon Islands Roromaraugi Parrying Club

$8,800.00

Solomon Islands

Mid-19th century

Wood

Length 51 in (129.5 cm)

Provenance: Abe and Paula Rosman, New York

The roromaraugi is a distinctive Solomon Islands parrying club, made with a broad crescent-shaped head designed primarily to deflect blows rather than strike. Clubs of this type were carried by warriors of standing, where weapon forms could express rank, readiness, and personal identity as well as martial function. This example comes from the collection of Abe and Paula Rosman, anthropologists whose work and collecting were closely connected to Melanesian field study.

The club is carved from a single piece of wood, with the head sweeping from the shaft in a clean asymmetric arc. A small figurative carving on the shaft gives the piece added sculptural interest while remaining integrated into the overall form. The dark, consistent surface patina reflects age and handling, preserving the object’s material presence without restoration.
