The pair are each cut as a closed shoe with a broad upswept toe rising to a point, hollowed to take the foot from the rear and finished with a heavy loop at the top for the strap. A fan of scalloped brass is fitted across the instep of each, flanked by scrolling brass mounts that follow the line of the toe, and further incised scrollwork is cut into the wood along the sides. The wood has darkened to an even chocolate brown with a hard polished surface across the toes and the outer walls where they took the wear, and the brass has toned to a soft yellow with the fixings tight and complete on both.
