Spain
17th century
Oil on panel in gilt frame locket
Height 5 in. (12.7 cm); Width 4½ in. (11.4 cm); Depth 1 in. (2.5 cm)
Provenance: John Arietta, London
This small Spanish portrait depicts a noblewoman in dark dress against a neutral ground, set within an elaborate gilt frame of oval form with applied decorative elements including dark cabochons around the border. Portrait lockets of this type were produced in Spain during the seventeenth century as luxury objects combining painted portraiture with the goldsmith's craft, intended for private devotional or commemorative use and sometimes associated with memorial practice. The oil on panel technique and the contained oval format are consistent with Spanish court and aristocratic portraiture of the period.
