A card from the 1933 Sport Kings Gum series issued by the Goudey Gum Company of Boston, the copyright cartouche of G.G.Co. dated 1933 printed at the lower right, showing Kahanamoku in a grey racing tank against a flat yellow ground beneath a red scroll banner, his name set in the black band below, with a diver and two swimmers rendered in silhouette along the base. Sport Kings was the first American gum series to run athletes from many sports together in one set, putting Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Jim Thorpe, Red Grange, Bobby Jones and Knute Rockne in the same forty-eight cards, and Kahanamoku was the only swimmer among them, which is why the card is collected out of two markets at once rather than one.
Duke Kahanamoku was born in Honolulu in 1890 into a family of watermen, took the 100 metres freestyle gold at Stockholm in 1912 and again at Antwerp in 1920, and did more than any other individual to carry surfing out of Hawaii and into Australia and California. The card comes from the collection of Kimo Wilder McVay, who became Kahanamoku's personal manager in 1961 and held the role until Kahanamoku's death in 1968, trademarking his name, opening Duke Kahanamoku's in the International Market Place and founding the Duke Kahanamoku Invitational, so the sheet passed through the hands of the man who managed the subject's own affairs.
