Sweden
1733
Copper
6 × 7⅛ in.; 1.17 kg
Provenance: Private collection, Australia; recovered from the wreck of the Danish ship Nicobar, lost 1783 off Quoin Point, Cape Town, South Africa; Certificate of Authenticity included
This two daler plate money (plåtmynt), struck in copper at the Avesta mint in 1733, was recovered from the wreck of the Danish ship Nicobar, lost in 1783 off Quoin Point, Cape Town, and represents one of the primary sources for surviving Swedish plate money, as the copper devaluation of 1776 led to the melting down of the majority of pieces remaining in circulation. The heavily corroded surface reflects fifty years of submersion followed by recovery, and the COA documenting Nicobar provenance gives the piece a verifiable and historically specific ownership origin.
