$4,800.00

Taino

Dominican Republic

1200 to 1500 AD

Stone

Height 10 1/2 inches, Width 4 1/4 inches, Weight 5.2 pounds

Provenance: Dick Pautzke, Santa Barbara, California

The celt is carved from a dense, dark gray green stone in a tall, teardrop shaped form that tapers to a smooth point at the base. Near the top, a zemi figure, a Taino representation of a spirit or ancestral being, is carved in low relief, with a rectangular framed face, a horizontal brow, and two large circular eyes. Below the face, a schematic body is rendered with bent, folded arm forms.

The lower two thirds of the celt are left plain and smooth, without additional carving. The stone surface shows a consistent dark tone throughout, with light natural mottling in places. The piece was previously in the collection of Dick Pautzke of Santa Barbara, California.
