Taino
Caribbean
1100–1450 AD
Jade, spondylus shell
Length 28"
Provenance: Martha Pillard, Honolulu, HI; Christian Rub, Santa Barbara, CA and Moorea, Tahiti
This Taino necklace is strung with alternating rounded jade beads and segments of orange spondylus shell, centering on a small carved spondylus pendant in the form of a seated human figure with clearly defined head, arms, and legs. Both jade and spondylus shell carried significant prestige value in pre-Columbian Caribbean and Mesoamerican cultures, with spondylus in particular circulating across long-distance exchange networks as a marker of status and ritual importance. The necklace has distinguished provenance, passing through two collections with strong Pacific and pre-Columbian holdings.
