Democratic Republic of the Congo
19th century
Hide, wood, pigment, and fiber
Height: 33 in (83.8 cm); Width: 21 in (53.3 cm)
Provenance: Klaus Hulser, Germany; collected on a hunting trip, 1913
This oval hide shield is constructed with a raised central spine, applied dark bosses, and bold areas of red and black pigment across the surface. The worn edges, aged texture, and well-used handle are consistent with a functional object of extended active use prior to its 1913 collection. The early documentation provided by the Hulser provenance places the piece within a known European collecting context and establishes a collecting date that predates the First World War.
The graphic painted design and softened surface patina together give the shield a strong visual character that reflects both its original making and its long history of handling.
