This albumen print by D. B. Chase of Santa Fe shows Taos Pueblo running races, with a handwritten inscription below the image noting the subject as "Indians of Taos running races on a feast day." Chase worked in Santa Fe in the late nineteenth century, and the image belongs to the early photographic record of Pueblo public gatherings in New Mexico. The crowd, racers, and open procession space give the photograph strong documentary value.
The composition records both the runners and the wider setting, including spectators gathered along both sides of the route. The albumen process and card mount place the image within nineteenth-century photographic practice. As a Taos Pueblo subject, the photograph is described specifically as a New Mexico Southwest image rather than a generalized Native American scene.
