The point is a long tapering blade of forged iron, heavily oxidized to a red brown crust, of the trade form carried on the northern plains in the 1870s. It was recovered on private land within the Reno battlefield and Sitting Bull's camp area along the timber fight line, and is sold with a topographical map marking the find spot and a numbered certificate of authenticity. The surface is stable with the corrosion of long burial.
The Battle of the Little Bighorn, known to the Lakota as the Battle of the Greasy Grass, was fought June 25 and 26, 1876, between the Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho and the 7th Cavalry under Custer, whose command was defeated in the most significant action of the Great Sioux War. The Reno fight in the valley timber opened the battle. Relics from the private land portions of the field survive with documentation of this kind.
