Thailand
19th century
Bronze
Height 10 3/4 in (27.3 cm), Width 6 1/2 in (16.5 cm)
Provenance: Private collection, Honolulu, Hawaii
Thai bronze Buddhas of the 19th century continued conventions established during the Rattanakosin period, which formalized iconographic standards for seated meditation figures following the consolidation of Bangkok as the royal capital in 1782. This figure is seated in maravijaya posture, the earth-touching gesture of the historical Buddha at the moment of enlightenment, with the right hand lowered to touch the ground and the left hand resting in the lap. The tiered crown-like ushnisha flame finial and the layered lotus throne base are characteristic features of the Thai Rattanakosin bronze tradition.
The casting is solid and well-defined, with clear articulation of the robe folds, facial features, and decorative throne elements. The bronze has developed a warm golden-brown patina consistent with age and handling over an extended period. The piece reflects the sustained production of devotional bronze images for Thai temple and domestic use throughout the 19th century.
