Thai Antique Seated Buddha Bronze, London Provenance

$1,550.00

Thailand

18th century

Bronze

Height 7 1/4 in (18.4 cm)

Provenance: Maurice Joy, London

Thai bronze Buddhas of the 18th century reflect the mature iconographic conventions of the Ayutthaya and early Bangkok periods, in which seated meditation figures were produced in large numbers for temple and domestic devotional use across the kingdom. This figure is seated with hands in dhyana mudra, the meditation gesture with both hands resting in the lap, conveying the state of meditative absorption associated with the path to enlightenment. The curled hair, elongated earlobes, and gently downcast eyes follow established canonical form.

The bronze has developed a deep dark patina with areas of earth encrustation consistent with age and burial or long-term outdoor placement. The overall surface condition and proportional restraint of the figure are characteristic of provincial Thai Buddhist casting workshops of the 18th century. Its provenance from Maurice Joy in London places it within the established European market for Southeast Asian devotional bronzes.
