$475.00

Thailand

Early 20th century

Bronze

Height 8 1/2 in (21.6 cm), Width 5 1/2 in (14 cm)

Provenance: Private collection, Honolulu, Hawaii

Thai bronze Buddhas of the early 20th century continued the iconographic conventions of the Rattanakosin period, producing seated meditation figures for temple and domestic devotional use across Thailand. This figure is seated in maravijaya posture with the right hand lowered in the earth touching gesture of enlightenment and the left hand resting in the lap, following the canonical form established in Thai Buddhist sculpture over several centuries. The flame finial ushnisha and the double lotus throne base are characteristic features of Bangkok period bronze production.

The casting is well defined with clear articulation of the robe, facial features, and throne elements. The bronze has developed an even dark patina consistent with age and handling. The piece reflects the sustained tradition of devotional bronze production in Thailand that continued into the early 20th century for both temple commissions and household shrines.
