This group of seven hand colored engravings comes from Thomas Martyn's The Universal Conchologist, published in London in 1784, each plate presenting one or two shells within a fine ruled double line border on cream laid paper. The shells are rendered in close detail with shaded modeling and touches of iridescence in the apertures, set as isolated studies against the blank ground of the sheet. One sheet carries a pencil annotation identifying a fluted trochus from Thomas Martyn's cabinet.
The sheets show significant condition issues, including brown water staining, tide lines, and foxing across several of the margins and grounds. At least one sheet has a torn upper corner and edge wear, and the staining extends into the plate area on some examples. The engravings are offered as a group of seven in their present condition as shown.
