Tlatilco Ceramic Male Figure, Central Mexico

$900.00

Mexico, Basin of Mexico, Tlatilco

1200–400 BC

Ceramic

Height: 2 in (5.1 cm)

Provenance: Steve Farr, Dallas, Texas

The Tlatilco culture flourished in the Basin of Central Mexico during the Middle Preclassic period, predating the Aztec presence in the Valley of Mexico by two millennia. Tlatilco figurines are among the earliest ceramic sculptural traditions of Mesoamerica, produced over several centuries before giving way to the regional styles of the Early Preclassic transition. Their intimate scale, lively poses, and often elaborate hairstyles reflect a sophisticated artistic tradition fully developed at a remarkably early date.

This small male figure displays the characteristic Tlatilco modeling vocabulary, with a broad torso, articulated limbs, and a head with defined facial features rendered in the direct, confident manner of Middle Preclassic workshop production. The surface retains an earth tone patina consistent with burial context, and the figure is mounted for display. The Dallas provenance gives the piece a clear single-owner collecting history.
