Tlingit, Northwest Coast
1880
Cedar wood with hand-forged brass tacks
Height 3 in. (7.6 cm), length 11¾ in. (29.8 cm)
Provenance: Ron Van Anda, Lititz, Pennsylvania
This Tlingit ceremonial bowl is carved from cedar with avian imagery worked into the elongated form. Bowls of this type relate to Northwest Coast feasting and ceremonial traditions, where carved vessels carried both practical and symbolic value. The bird-like heads and body treatment connect the object to the strong animal and crest-based visual language of Tlingit carving.
The bowl shows a well-used surface, with hand-forged brass tacks set along the rim and figure details. These metal additions give emphasis to the form while reflecting the incorporation of trade materials into Indigenous Northwest Coast objects. The long, balanced shape and worn patina give the piece a clear sense of age, use, and ceremonial presence.
