Tlingit, Northwest Coast
Goat horn with marine shell inlays
Height 21¼ in. (54 cm), width 5¼ in. (13.3 cm)
Provenance: Flury and Company, Seattle, Washington
This Tlingit feast ladle is carved from goat horn with a bird-form finial at the handle terminal and marine shell inlays along the handle. Ladles of this scale were used in potlatch and feast contexts to serve food to guests, where the quality of the serving implements reflected the status and crest rights of the host. The 1860s date places this piece within the early period of documented Tlingit horn work reaching outside collections.
The ladle has a deep, well-formed bowl and a long curved handle that follows the natural curve of the horn. The warm patina across the surface is consistent with sustained use and age, and the shell inlays remain intact along the handle. Its scale, material, and bird finial give it strong visual presence as a ceremonial serving object.
