Wood
Height 2 in / 5.1 cm; Width 4 in / 10.2 cm; Length 4.75 in / 12.1 cm
Provenance: Private Virginia collection
This miniature Tlingit grease bowl was made in Alaska in the 1860s. Grease bowls were used on the Northwest Coast for serving oils and rendered fats, especially in feasting and ceremonial contexts. The smaller scale gives this example a concentrated form while retaining the visual structure of a larger vessel.
The bowl is carved in wood with incised Northwest Coast design elements across the exterior face. Its deep interior, worn rim, and dark patina show the balance between use and sculptural design. The compact proportions and controlled carving make it a strong small-scale example of Tlingit vessel work.
