Tlingit Sheep Horn Potlatch Spoon Bird Form

$4,500.00

Tlingit, British Columbia / Southern Yukon

1880

Sheep horn

Height 10 in. (25.4 cm), width 4 in. (10.2 cm)

Provenance: Mroczek Auctioneers, Renton, Washington

This Tlingit potlatch spoon is carved from sheep horn in a bird-related form. Potlatch spoons were used in ceremonial feasting, where the serving and distribution of food carried social, political, and spiritual meaning. The bird form connects the object to the animal imagery central to Northwest Coast visual traditions.

The spoon has a long rising handle and a deep curved bowl, making use of the natural shape and strength of the horn. Its warm surface and signs of handling indicate age and use while keeping the overall form clear and restrained. The balance between the sweeping profile and practical bowl gives the piece a strong sculptural presence.
