The sepia toned photograph shows Tom Mix in a pale hat standing beside his dark horse, the bridle set with studded and beaded work, trees soft behind them. It is inscribed across the lower field in ink To John C., Best Wishes, Tom Mix, the hand running diagonally across the image. The print shows a crease across the upper right corner and light handling wear.
Tom Mix (1880 to 1940) was the leading cowboy star of American silent film, appearing in nearly three hundred pictures for Selig and Fox and setting the pattern of the showman screen cowboy that Autry and Rogers inherited. At the height of the 1920s he was among the highest paid stars in Hollywood, celebrated for doing his own riding and stunt work. Signed photographs inscribed to named recipients date from his years of studio fan correspondence and personal appearances.
