This copper plate engraving depicts a view of Anamoka in Tonga, showing the landing of Captain Cook’s crew and their exchange with local inhabitants. The image comes from the atlas of Cook’s third voyage, published in 1784, with the composition after John Webber. Anamoka, also recorded as Nomuka, was among the Tongan islands encountered during the voyage and appears in the European printed record as part of the “Friendly Islands.”
Webber served as official artist on Cook’s third voyage, producing drawings that shaped European visual knowledge of the Pacific. The engraving records a coastal encounter scene, combining landscape, figures, canoes, and exchange within the formal language of late 18th-century expedition publishing. As a Cook voyage print, it connects Tongan maritime history with the wider visual archive of Polynesian exploration and contact.
