25 x 19 3/4 in. including frame; image 16 x 11 3/4 in.
63.5 x 50.2 cm including frame; image 40.6 x 29.8 cm
Provenance: Dr. Terence Barrow, Honolulu, Hawaii
From the atlas of M.J. Dumont d’Urville’s voyage of the Astrolabe, 1826–1829, published in Paris in 1833. This lithograph depicts a Tongan canoe, placing it within the French visual record of Pacific navigation, island life, and maritime encounter. Tonga held a central place in early European accounts of Polynesia, especially through its canoe traditions, chiefly culture, and regional exchange networks.
The plate is presented in a koa wood frame, giving the work a strong Pacific display context. The lithographic process allowed voyage publications to circulate detailed images of vessels, people, and places to European readers. As a work on paper, it connects Tongan material culture with the broader history of 19th-century Pacific exploration imagery.
