This lithograph, titled Combat Tonga Tabou, comes from Plate 92 of the atlas for the voyage of the corvette Astrolabe, 1826–1829. Published in Paris, it belongs to the French visual record of Polynesia produced from Dumont d’Urville’s Pacific expedition. The subject presents a combat scene at Tongataboo, the principal island of Tonga, known in earlier European accounts as part of the Friendly Islands.

The lithographic process allowed expedition images to circulate with clear figure detail, landscape setting, and narrative action. This example records conflict as a staged visual subject within the wider documentation of Tongan life, encounter, and ceremony. Its provenance from John Dominis Holt gives the print a Honolulu collecting history connected to Pacific art and exploration material.
