United States, Arizona, Tonto National Monument
1908–1910
Gelatin silver print, large format
11 × 14" (27.9 × 35.6 cm)
Provenance: Private collection, Utah
This large-format gelatin silver print by Walter J. Lubkin documents the Tonto Upper Ruins in Arizona, captured during his 1908 expedition into the Superstition Mountains for the United States Reclamation Service. The Tonto Ruins, perched above the Salt River in present-day Tonto National Monument, are among the best preserved Salado culture cliff dwellings in Arizona, inhabited between approximately 1150 and 1450 CE. Lubkin traveled on horseback packing a large stationary glass plate camera, tripod, and fragile glass plates while documenting the Salt River watershed drainage systems in advance of future dam construction below Roosevelt Dam.
Lubkin's images were produced just as Roosevelt Dam was transforming the surrounding landscape, lending them particular historical resonance as documents of the site before the full impact of modern development. His 1908 expedition into the western Superstition Mountains is recognized as one of the earliest known photographic ventures into this remote landscape. The print is in collector condition with private Utah provenance.
