Trobriand Islands, Papua New Guinea, circa 1900
Glass trade beads, nut, pearl shell, fiber cord
Length 15 3/4 inches (40 cm)
Provenance: London trade; old collection label dated 1924
The necklace is strung in two lengths of small glass trade beads in pale and dark blue, the two strands drawn together at the base through a single dark nut bead and then continuing as two short tails. Each tail closes with a further dark bead above a teardrop of pearl shell, the two shells hanging side by side and cut to slightly different sizes, their inner faces showing the iridescence and their outer faces a chalky grey where the surface has weathered. An old handwritten collection label remains tied to the cord at the back, dated 1924, and the fiber shows fraying at the knots.
