Truk Island Coral Food Pounder, Four Projection Top

$2,800.00

Truk (Chuuk) Island, Federated States of Micronesia

Early 19th century

Coral

Height: 5½ inches (14 cm); Diameter: 4¼ inches (10.8 cm)

Provenance: Private collection, Honolulu, Hawaii

Food pounders known as phou were among the most valued personal possessions of Truk Island women, passed from mother to daughter across generations as heirloom objects carrying family identity and social standing. This example is distinguished by four organic projections at the crown, a form that differs from the plain flat striking surface of more common examples and reflects the natural coral structure incorporated into the design. The coral has developed a smooth, pale surface through age and use, its porous texture uniform across the body.

The waisted profile, broad flared base, and projecting crown of this pounder reflect a maker who selected a coral specimen with inherent structural qualities suited to the form, working with the material rather than imposing a standardized shape upon it. At 5½ inches in height this is a compact but substantial object, and its Honolulu provenance is consistent with the movement of Micronesian material through Hawaii during the 20th century.
