Ulua Valley Bat Effigy Vessel with Punctate Wing

$9,500.00

Ulua Valley culture (attribution pending confirmation)

Honduras

Circa 300 BC to 300 AD

Ceramic, chocolate ware

Height 8 1/2 inches, Width 9 3/4 inches

Provenance: Private East Coast collection; acquired from Merrin Gallery, New York, September 5, 1996

The vessel takes the form of a bat with a wide open mouth forming the opening of the vessel, above a rounded eye rendered as a raised ring. One wing lies flush against the head and is decorated with a field of small raised dots in a triangular arrangement. Short incised lines mark the lower body, suggesting toes or claws.

The surface is a dark chocolate brown throughout, with scattered lighter patches and a naturally aged patina. Ancient losses are visible to the toes of one foot, and repaired breaks are present in the lower rear body along old fracture lines. A CIRAM testing report accompanies the piece.
