Venice, Italy
18th century
Charcoal on paper
Drawing 6 × 13⅛ in. (15.2 × 33.3 cm); mount 6⅞ × 14¼ in. (17.5 × 36.2 cm)
Provenance: Private Massachusetts collection; Private Italian collection; unidentified collector's mark lower right
This Venetian charcoal drawing of an arm is a study of the kind produced within academic figure drawing practice, where individual limbs were drawn repeatedly from the model to develop command of anatomy, foreshortening, and surface modeling. The soft charcoal rendering captures the form of the arm with a loose atmospheric quality consistent with Venetian draughtsmanship of the eighteenth century. The presence of an unidentified collector's mark lower right indicates the drawing passed through at least one documented collection before its recorded American and Italian provenance.
