This drawing is worked in brown ink and wash and shows Neptune standing with his weight on one leg, a length of pale cloth draped across his hips and falling behind him. He is bearded and long haired, holding a trident upright in one hand while extending the other arm outward with the finger pointing. A dolphin coils around his lower leg with its tail curling upward, and brown wash lays in a dark sky sweeping across the ground behind him.
The wash builds the modeling of the torso and limbs in warm brown tones against the toned paper, with the sheet showing light spotting consistent with age. The drawing is set within a brown mat and an ornately carved dark and gilt frame. It is presented framed as shown.
